Taoyuan Airport Third Runway Temporary Overnight Apron Fully Operational on Jan 30
To cope with the peak travel season during the Lunar New Year holiday, Minister of Transportation Chen Shih-kai announced today (January 21) during an inspection of the construction progress at Taoyuan Airport that the temporary overnight apron on the third runway of Taoyuan Airport will be fully operational on January 30. This will add 16 aircraft parking positions, effectively addressing parking demand, increasing flight scheduling flexibility, and making it safer and smoother for passengers traveling home or abroad.
The airport company pointed out that with the rapid recovery of international travel, national airlines are expanding their fleets and launching new routes, leading to a significant increase in parking demand at Taoyuan Airport. The opening of the temporary overnight apron will not only immediately replenish parking space but also reduce the impact of the construction on airport operations during the full-scale construction of the third runway.
✈️ For passengers:
The additional parking positions mean that aircraft will not have to wait for empty spaces for extended periods, effectively reducing the risk of delays due to ground operations, improving flight punctuality, and providing more stable connection times for transit passengers.
🏗️ Construction Technology Highlights:
The temporary overnight apron construction for the third runway utilizes a slipform paver, automating the four processes of laying, compaction, shaping, and leveling in one go. It can complete 1,811 square meters daily, significantly reducing manpower requirements by approximately 5 to 8 times, thus accelerating the completion of public works projects while ensuring quality and safety.
Minister of Transportation Chen Shih-kai stated that the Lunar New Year is the most important time of year for Taiwanese people to return home and travel. He has instructed the airport company to ensure airside safety and to fully open all 16 parking stands as scheduled on January 30th. Simultaneously, with the completion of Taiwan-US tariff negotiations, cargo demand has increased significantly, coupled with passenger demand during the Lunar New Year period. The opening of the temporary overnight apron will enhance Taoyuan Airport's operational scheduling capabilities.
Furthermore, the three major national airlines are expected to introduce 22 new wide-body aircraft this year (10 each for China Airlines and Starlux Airlines, and 2 for EVA Air), and will gradually open new routes or increase flights. For example, EVA Air will soon launch flights to Washington D.C., Starlux Airlines plans to launch flights to Europe, and China Airlines will increase flights to New York.
To accommodate the introduction of new aircraft and increased flights, Taoyuan International Airport has activated eight operational parking stands in the North Concourse of Terminal 3, and added 16 parking stands to the temporary overnight apron. This will fully support airlines in expanding their service capacity and provide passengers with a better service experience.
Minister of Transportation Chen Shih-kai pointed out that he has visited Taoyuan Airport three times in the past month, witnessing the opening of the North Concourse of Terminal 3, the completion of the installation of the last curved beam in the terminal, and the imminent completion and opening of the temporary overnight apron on the third runway. This demonstrates that major projects are progressing steadily, and the nation's gateway is firmly moving towards the future. The Minister has long encouraged the airport corporation to cooperate with the Civil Aeronautics Administration to expedite land acquisition and, together with the Freeway Bureau and the engineering team, to actively expedite subsequent construction work with the utmost professionalism and responsibility, while adhering to the principles of schedule and safety.
The third runway is a core component of the Taoyuan Aerotropolis project. Upon completion, it will increase the number of aircraft takeoffs and landings per hour at Taoyuan Airport from the current 50 to 80-90, significantly enhancing overall operational and service capabilities. Combined with the construction of Terminal 3 and satellite concourses, this will propel the airport towards its 2045 target of 83.8 million passengers, 3.85 million tons of cargo, and 435,000 annual takeoffs and landings. This will make travel more convenient for Taiwanese citizens, streamline logistics, and inject new momentum into Taiwan's overall economic development.
